RIPPLE RIPPLE RIPPLING

has been working with Shigushan village, on the outskirts of Wuhan in
China, since 2015.

A site of both labour supply and resource extraction, the mundane village life and landscape embody the social and ecological consequences and dependences of China’s urbanisation.

Villagers in Shigushan are part of the country’s 295 million rural migrant workers, who dissolve their families as a survival tactic and take turns to float between workplaces in the city and the home village. What has emerged are indeterminate and resilient assemblages that stretch spatially from house to territory, coordinate temporally from daily to multi-year cycles, and manifest as bodily dispositions in everyday life. The precarious livelihood of rural migrant workers is a temporary, transient state that has become part of a broader structure rather than an exception.

While such state is at once the result of systemic inequality, subject to symbolic violence and self-imposed, RIPPLE RIPPLE RIPPLING rejects flat victim narratives that often reinscribe marginalised communities as depleted and damaged.
Through a situated perspective with a focus on the home village side, the project attunes to how villagers make worlds, from opportunistic reparation of scarred landscapes to networks of care that extend and transgress familial bonds. Such attunement also entails a process-oriented method at the intersection of architecture, anthropology, filmmaking and performance.

From participant observation to performative improvisation to collective happening, this project is a long-term commitment to a place, its marginalised community, and their agency, complicity and resistance rooted in precarity.

The project has been awarded a Graham Foundation
Production Grant ︎︎︎ (2024-25), following a Graham Foundation Research Grant (2022–23). The initial documentary phase was supported by the Driving the Human initiative (2021). Fieldwork between 2018 and 2019 was enabled by the Collective Forms in China project funded by the British Academy. The Architectural Association Wuhan Visiting School (2015–17) was a collective effort in the research with the help of all the participating students and tutors, and received local support from Huazhong University of Science and Technology School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Floating Dissolving Rippling

	CONTEXT
FLOATING
DISSOLVING
RIPPLING

China’s 295 million floating population of rural migrant workers has resulted in a missing middle generation in more than 80% of the country’s rural families today. The rural households are dissolved, fundamentally challenging the nuclear family model.

A ripple effect of domesticity is identified by the architectural research on the ordinary self-built family houses of these rural families. In contrast to the modern nuclear family flat as a fixed domain with clear separation, ‘rippling’ as a way of living means to settle in liminality: Boundaries do not separate but bind; Thresholds are not to be passed by but inhabited. In other words, rippling renders a liminal state of constant emerging, unfolding and becoming. What this entails and enables is always being attentive to others, anticipating negotiation, mediation and association. This is vital to forming resilient assemblages of social and economic security that hinge on inter-generational and cross-household dependency.

Not to romanticise,

the practice of ‘floating’, ‘dissolving’ and ‘rippling’ is opportunistic, and essentially a survival tactic of the
marginalised. As vulnerable participants situated within and subordinated to
the capitalist machine, instead of confronting, they find ways to relate to the
agents of power. These are actions with no lexical declarations, struggles with
no overt conflicts and stories with no hero or heroine. Yet, tremendous
knowledge lies in the capturing of latent and temporal dispositions in order to
find possibilities between dominant forces, agents and systems, which may lead
to altering the interplay between them. Diminished and overlooked by the
dominant culture as well as the paternalistic model of experts’ leadership,
this knowledge is dispersed and circulated as part of the daily life in the
margins.

	FIELDWORK

MATERIALDEPENDENCIES

Driving around the countryside, the scenery is dotted by tiny spots of material extraction and processing — supply chain fragments that are almost too mundane to be noticed.

Like this random road junction near Shigushan village in Wuhan. Where the white-ish hill is was a lake. Now it’s dried and becomes an open-air storage of construction aggregate. The two road sides are in fact a plant nursery. When trees here grow bigger, they will be moved to the road side in cities.

However mundane, those are faint traces of urban life’s material dependencies and how it transforms territories out of sight.

	FIELDWORK

HOUSE FOUNDATIONS

House foundations in Shigushan are usually made of stones reused from demolition sites in the village, and they always host multiple futures, oscillating between a potential home and a ruin depending on the family’s financial situation. While waiting for their next phase, these foundations often function as kitchen gardens and children’s playgrounds.

	FIELDWORK

CHAIRANDACTIVE WAITING
The chair is the most common piece of furniture for rural Chinese families. It is also a spatial device that facilitates sitting — sitting down to eat; waiting for something, or someone; or playing cards by the side of the road. Although this act may seem mundane, it matters a great deal where one sits and for what. People tend to sit on and around spatial thresholds — that could be in their yard, at the gate or in front of the convenience store on the village street. To an outsider, the sitting villagers may appear to be doing nothing more than having the occasional conversation with passing fellow villagers or neighbours. What they are actually doing is a form of ‘active waiting’, which enables them to be continuously attentive to others, anticipating negotiation, mediation and association. In other words, by pushing their own bodies to inhabit thresholds, these villagers are actively building up an elastic field of support and a sense of relatedness between themselves. This active waiting on a collective scale is fundamental to forming resilient assemblages of social and economic security that hinge on inter-generational and cross-household dependency, at the time when state welfare is insufficient and core family members are absent — and the chair is an essential tool for its practice.

	FIELDWORK
SITUATED
IMAGINARIES

A rectangle is chalked on the dusty ground in front of the village convenience store. A boy lies down to fit himself in it, rolling around as though he were lying on a soft, comfy bed. He later fills a square in the corner with dense blue. He said it is the sea, one in the furthermost place.

A granny likes to sing. She sings her way around the village. Her walking stick is sometimes a paddle and sometimes a chisel, depending on where her songs take her in places and times.

A group of aunties dances on the village street every day after dinner. Occasionally, cars and goats pass. Unphased, the aunties dance around them.

These are some recent moments in the daily life of Shigushan village. Our team has been living with the community in Shigushan. The daily activities are improvising, together with the villagers, slightly odd scenarios, in which playing, singing and dancing take place.

Feeling odd or weird is the delicate, ambiguous state we are trying to co-curate. Oscillating between the familiar and the strange, it is one step out of reality but not yet into fiction. With improvisation, we hope to stimulate the villagers’ own performative expressions, story-telling and imaginations that are otherwise hidden.

This is part of an experimental framework of Speculative Anthropology: joining with marginalised communities in their situated perspectives and embodied vision. At least, if done with care and sensitivity, it is an act of solidarity. At most, such alliances constitute political subjects of knowledge—“knowledge potent for constructing worlds less organised by axes of domination.”

	FIELDWORKCOLLECTIVE HAPPENING

A screen back event in Shigushan village marked the end of the most recent fieldwork phase (2022-23). Through a film installation, we shared with the community how their beautiful daily life and the ‘Situated Imaginaries’ are featured on screen.
This collective happening took place in the village’s abandoned People’s Commune Assembly Hall, an iconic site for large-scale political gatherings during China’s People’s Commune period and the Cultural Revolution in the 1970s. Our film installation turned the commune hall from a political site into a theatre of everyday life. Almost the entire village came to watch and experience the film installation, and they loved it. Among all recognitions, this is the most significant to us.

Documentation of this event has been edited into an experimental documentary The HALL (2024).
