FIELDWORK
MATERIAL
DEPENDENCIES
Driving around the countryside, the scenery is dotted by tiny spots of material extraction and processing — supply chain fragments that are almost too mundane to be noticed.
Like this random road junction near Shigushan village in Wuhan. Where the white-ish hill is was a lake. Now it’s dried and becomes an open-air storage of construction aggregate. The two road sides are in fact a plant nursery. When trees here grow bigger, they will be moved to the road side in cities.
However mundane, those are faint traces of urban life’s material dependencies and how it transforms territories out of sight.
